just make basic drum loops for now...and start clickin every button on the program to find out what it does...fruity loops is one of the most user friendly programs...it might look confusing now...but give it some time

once you get the drum patterns down...and you want to put some melodies to it...start sampling songs....listen to songs on the radio that you like...old songs...new songs...and listen for parts of the song that you think you would be able to make a hip hop beat out of...then you actually cut that piece of the song out and use it in your own beat...

youll need more programs...and a whole library of songs, sounds, and plugins...but it takes time to get there...dedicate as much time as possible to this if your really serious about it...itll pay off
    Hey 2 Time,

Thanks for that - it was really helpful.

I was just wondering what you meant by cutting a bit of a song out and using it in my own beat.

How do I get a simple background beat going? Should I make this up myself, or do most people use another artist's tune and then modify it/add to it?

I am such an impatient person lol, but I'm going to stick with it and try as hard as I can every day.

I like the piano roll in FL - it sounds nice. I'd like to add that to a background beat.

    Many thanks for your help.

He meant sampling from other songs. Though you should honestly just learn fl before you start thinking about that, or you're going to become even more confused.
